State Police See Spike In Teen Fatalities On The Road
Updated: Nov 23, 2008 09:35 AM EST
Last week three teenagers were killed in a car crash in Virginia Beach. Closer to home in October, a teen was flown to the hosptial with serious injuries after another accident. Then a few days later in Chesterfield, a teen was killed in another crash.
And in Septemeber two were killed in a Henrico crash, the driver, just 18 years old.
"In the last three months, 35 teens have lost their lives on Virginia roadways and of those 35, 14 involved teenagers at the wheel," said Sgt. Tom Cunningham with the VA State Police.
State Police tell us that in nearly half of the accidents, teens failed to do something simple, buckle up.
The recent spike in fatal teen crashes has State Police urging parents to lead by example when on the road this Thanksgiving.
"And it is also a good opportunity on those long trips to discuss through example safe driving, some of the basics just about following distance and safe speeds and being attentive," said Cunningham.
He also stresses putting down the phone.
"While distractions are dangerous for even the seasoned drivers, they're especially dangerous for teens drivers because they're learning the basics."
In Virginia, it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to use a phone while driving, handsfree included.
