Delaware State Police are kicking off a weeklong enforcement effort designed to cut down on crime and accidents during the holiday weekend.
The effort includes extra officers patrolling incident-prone areas and looking for impaired or aggressive drivers. There will also be checkpoints set up throughout the week in different areas, stretching from Naamans Road in New Castle County near the Pennsylvania state line to Delmar in Sussex County near the Maryland line, state police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Whitmarsh said.
Whitmarsh said the first checkpoint was set up Friday on Del. 4 east of Newport. In 2 1/2 hours, officers issued 10 traffic citations, five arrests for driving under the influence and made three criminal arrests
