WILTON -- State police are investigating the death of a 1-year-old boy who reportedly tumbled down a flight of stairs at his mother's home Saturday at Fernwald Apartments on U.S. Route 2.
Matteo Hanson was pronounced dead at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington after the 9 a.m. incident, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.
It is not yet known how or why the boy fell, McCausland said late Saturday.
"The child fell on the stairs that went from the second floor to the first floor," McCausland said. "I do not know how far the child fell."
McCausland said an autopsy will be scheduled for today or Monday, at which time more information about the death is expected.
"I suspect there won't be anything definitive until the autopsy," he said.
He said the criminal investigation division of the state police is looking into the death and a team of detectives was sent to the scene. They were still there as of about 5 p.m. Saturday, McCausland said.
"Our involvement is that we investigate all children's deaths under the age of three," he said. "That is why we're working on this. I don't have any more specifics, really, other than that."
The child was born June 24, 2007, according to McCausland. He said the boy's mother's name is Brandy Sweet. He did not know if Sweet is the one who reported the incident.
"The 911 call came into the dispatch center that covers Wilton and Wilton police responded, along with an ambulance," he said.
Messages left on answering machines at the apartment building manager's office in Wilton, as well as at another company office in Rumford, were not returned as of 8 p.m. Saturday.
