Police kill 200 robbery suspects in SW Nigeria

LAGOS, Dec. 2 (Xinhua)-- About 200 armed robbery suspects have lost their lives in gun battles with the police in Nigeria's southwest Lagos and Ogun State commands in the past 10 months, local media reported Tuesday.
The Ogun State police command has recovered about 13 million naira (110,000 U.S. dollars) cash from robbery suspects within the period.
Lagos Commissioner of Police Marvel Akpoyibo and his Ogun State counterpart Emmanuel Ayeni respectively disclosed this on Monday during an interactive session with the Chairman of Police Service Commission, Parry Osayande in Lagos.
According to Akpoyibo, 132 robbery suspects were killed while 417 suspects were arrested in Lagos State within the period under review.
He said 1,040 vehicles were recovered from the hoodlums. Akpoyibo said the police in Lagos were aware of the need to provide security to a mega city like Lagos, adding that about 12,812 ammunition was recovered by his command.
In his speech, Ayeni said about 86 robbery suspects lost their lives in different encounters with policemen in Ogun State. About 13.18 million naira believed to be stolen by robbers at various points of the state was recovered.
According to him, the command has dismissed about 61 policemen over extortion and indiscipline.
