The following is a statement from the Indiana State Police which arrived via email after the Chesterton Tribune went to press Friday:

The Indiana State Police were called to a one vehicle roll-over crash on Interstate 65 near State Road 2 (240 mile mark) at approximately 11:30 PM on Thanksgiving night. The crash involved a roll-over into the grassy median and claimed the life of the driver and only passenger. The investigation by state troopers from the Lowell District indicated that a 2000 GMC Denali was traveling north on Interstate 65 when it left the road to the left and entered the grassy median. The vehicle then began to roll in the median.

The vehicle rolled over at least two times. As the Denali rolled over in the median divider, both occupants were ejected from the vehicle. The vehicle continued across the southbound lanes of I-65. It came to rest on the right side shoulder of the interstate. Both ejected occupants died as a result of massive internal injuries.

The driver was determined to be Sherry Orton, 45, of Merrillville, IN. The passenger was identified as Thomas D. Orton, 47, of Merrillville, IN. Both subjects were not wearing seatbelts and this is believed to be a factor that increased the injuries they received.

It is unknown why the vehicle left the roadway. Weather is not a factor in the crash. Investigation and clean-up of the crash left the road closed for approximately 80 minutes. The incident remains under investigation.

Questions about the crash should be directed to Trooper Fredrick Blohm at the Lowell Post. Questions about the deceased should be directed to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Family members of the deceased have been notified.
