Investigators say a gunman who pointed a rifle at Bay City Police officers died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Bay County Prosecuting Attorney Kurt Asbury says Officer Jeffrey Doud was justified in shooting twice at 28-year-old Randall Kaczynski after he pointed a rifle at another officer.
The November 11th incident started when Kaczynski forced his way into his ex-wife's home at 512 North Birney. As police arrived , Kaczynski pointed the rifle at officers while demanding a cigarette. Officer Jeffrey Doud fired two shots, hitting Kaczynski once in the arm. Kaczynski fell back into an enclosed porcj after officers heard a third shot.
An autopsy revealed the third and fatal shot came from Kaczynski's rifle. Bay City Police Chief Michael Cecchini says an internal investigation is continuing to determine if Doud followed department policy in his use of deadly force.
