    GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. --

State troopers said an officer slammed into a father and son while driving drunk in a city car. The father and son talked about the ordeal to Channel 2.

The father said he smelled alcohol when he pulled Officer Stuart Gaines from his car after the crash.

“It’s like, ‘Whoa!’ You know? It’s a police officer who’s drunk,” said Luis Garcia. Garcia said that’s what he exclaimed seconds after he pulled a Lawrenceville police detective from his smashed, unmarked police car.

“And when I pulled him, he fell down. He couldn’t even stand up. That’s when I smelled it. He had alcohol,” said Garcia.

State troopers said Gaines car hit Garcia’s vehicle from behind. Garcia also said the officer was speeding.

Gaines, who was in uniform, was fired from the Lawrenceville Police Department and charged with driving under the influence.

“He could have hurt someone seriously or killed someone,” said Major Paul King with the Lawrenceville Police Department.

Garcia was driving with is 13-year-old son, Marcos, in a white Lincoln Towncar when they were hit. The father was hurt and his son suffered head and face injuries.

After the crash, Marcos gathered his senses and noticed the officer. “He was bleeding from his eye. My dad was trying to help him up but he was like…drunk,” said Marcos.

Gaines has bonded out of jail. Channel 2 was unable to reach him for comment.

Garcia said his injuries have left him unable to work.
