SC Highway Patrol commander job still open

GREENVILLE, SC (AP) - The leader of the South Carolina Highway Patrol says dealing with budget cuts have kept him from hiring a new commander for the force.

Spokesman Sid Gaulden told The Greenville News that Public Safety Department Director Mark Keel has received at least a half-dozen applications for the job, some from within the patrol.

The job has been open for five months. Keel had initially wanted to fill the position by Thanksgiving, but Gaulden says dealing with budget cuts has become more of a priority.

Keel took over in June after videos of trooper misconduct emerged and black lawmakers criticized how the officers were disciplined.

A spokesman for Gov. Mark Sanford says the governor is comfortable with Keel's decision to concentrate on budget cuts.
